5 Best Pool Exercises for Seniors

  1. Water Jogging

Water jogging is a pool workout that gets your heart pumping and blood flowing around your body. Head to the waist-deep area of the pool and jog laps across the pool at a speed that's comfortable for you. Water jogging is a great warm-up and -down exercise.

  1. Leg Lifts

The humble leg lift works all the muscles of your legs. Stand at the side of the pool with your right hand on the rail for balance. Lift your left leg up and out to the side and back down. Repeat this motion for about 20 repetitions or until your leg tires, then perform the same exercise on your left side.

  1. Arm Circles

For a water workout that benefits your upper body, try arm circles. Move to an area of the pool where you can comfortably submerge every part of your body apart from your head and neck. Elevate your arms out to both sides at shoulder height and start moving them in forward-motion circles at a moderate speed. After about 20 repetitions or whenever your arms get tired, switch to backward circles.

  1. Abdominal Moves

Head to the pool's corner and, submerged to your chest, use your arms to support yourself on the pool's sides. Bring your legs together at the knees and lift them to your chest, holding for the count of 10. You can also twist your legs from side to side for 10 counts to give your oblique muscles a workout.

  1. Leg Kicks

Leg kicks are a popular water aerobics exercise. Hold a kickboard out in front of you and, at a comfortable cadence, start kicking your way across the pool. Try for 10 laps or until your legs tire.
